Chocorua Residence

5265452_orig.jpg

A new residence near Chocorua Lake, NH that was built for a couple approaching retirement. The design program required that the home be energy efficient (Energy Star rated), easy to maintain, and have extremely low operating costs. It was critical for the space planning to be flexible and transitional - both intimate and sheltering, and able to support a large dinner party–or extended stays by family members.

Like the Wonalancet Residence, this home also sits atop an ancient glacial kame. The site had an abundance of gravel that could be used for fill and driveway construction, thereby eliminating the need to go off-site for a gravel source.

The home is constructed with white pine (interior timber frame, porch decking), hemlock (porch frame and roof decking), and yellow birch (bathroom countertop, interior trim, built-ins) cut and milled on-site. We also used regionally-sourced eastern white cedar and red oak for siding material and flooring, respectively.

The home is 3,544 SF. This figure includes a partially finished basement of 1,287 SF.

The residence has an advanced thermal envelope. Heating and cooling is provided by a stateof-the-art air-sourced heat pump system that is powered by a 7.35 KW solar photovotaic array on the roof. Energy Star rated appliances, water saving plumbing fixtures, and LED lighting fixtures enhance the home's low energy profile.

The HERS rating is 25.
